Hello, I'm Shelby Crockett

As I develop alongside my art, I come to understand more and more about its usefulness as a tool to explore curiosity on a given subject, therefore gaining knowledge. This isn’t to say that I consider my own artwork to be particularly intellectual by nature, but exploratory. This may very well stem from my interest and education in the field of biology. With the combined mindset of an artist and a scientist, I take a highly experimental approach to my work, using what I already know about a subject to extend my knowledge.  I don't limit myself on subjects, as I see drawing a new subject as an opportunity to gain some new understanding. I believe understanding of a variety of subjects is one key to becoming a better artist.

As with anyone on a mission to learn, I always find something more to explore, often literally. I improve through my curiosity, using experiences to help me understanding a subject, and and drawing that new-found understanding.  Learning about art from other artists and teachers is only part of the battle--I cannot ignore the benefits I reap as an artist from knowledge in other areas as well. As I learn new concepts of science, music, language, psychology, and technology, mythology, history, and the wonders of the world around me, I am expanding the potential I have to grow as an artist. It is my hope that, while I always remain a student in some way, my art will eventually be useful not only as a learning tool, but as a teaching tool too.

I was born in Orem, Utah on May 9, 1991, and have been drawing since I could first wield a crayon.  I moved to Cedar City in southern Utah at a young age, where I grew up, taking any and all art classes I could get my fingers on.  I graduated from Tuacahn High School with the knowledge that I was to study art...but that I couldn't do it without also learning about the world around me. So I've been steadily working within my interests in art, and whatever else my curiosity leads me to, arriving at this point in my life: A graduate of Southern Utah University's College of Visual and Performing Arts with BFA of Illustration, and a minor in biology, and, more importantly, an artist with a style, flexibility, and collection of work made from curiosity, learning, and a sense of adventure.

I am currently residing in Provo, Utah with my husband, Richard, and children, Alexis and Owen, taking on commissions and projects, adventuring in the great outdoors, and making beautiful cakes. I am always up for a new job or challenge of putting inspired visuals to inspired ideas. If you like what you see in my portfolios, please contact me by phone or email.
